The Romanesque cloister

The Romanesque cloister of the monastery of Santa Maria de l’Estany is one of the most important in Catalonia.
The north wing of the cloister, begun in mid-century XII is the most primitive. In the capitals, it represents Christ’s life from birth to Calvary, and other allegorical to the redemption of mankind. Note are the capitals of the Flight into Egypt, the Holy Supper and the entry of Jesus into Jerusalem.
In the west wing of the cloister, especially in the interior, capitals are decorated with themes of beasts and flora as well as geometric figures and heraldry. It is worth mentioning the capital with winged animals.

The Romanesque church was consecrated in 1133, although it has been profoundly reformed several times. Especially notable is the Gothic sculpture of alabaster Virgin de l’Estany attitude of breastfeeding (s. XIV). Also of interest are the Romanesque baptismal font and the remains of the choir stalls, the Baroque period.

In the prehistoric cave of Toll (Moià in the province of Barcelona) have found traces of fire and a few flint for the Musteriano, these remains show us the human presence of Neanderthals during the Middle Paleolithic (100,000 to 40,000 years old) in the region (Bages). We invite you to visit the prehistoric caves and the archaeological museum to learn more about the human presence of Neanderthals during the Middle Paleolithic.

Ignatius of Loyola fell walked from Montserrat to Manresa in 1522. Here he spent eleven months, a time of great importance to his life and to waht later would be the Society of Jesus. His favorite place of prayer was the cavern or cave around which  the present House of Spiritual Exercises stands. His experience lived here led St. Ignatius  to write the  “Book of Spiritual Exercises.”

Saint Ignatius and his stay in Manresa,  his experience and the prominence it had in the biography of the saint and the history of the Society of Jesus has made Manresa and the Cave of Saint Ignatius a place of interest for many visitors. La Cueva de San Ignacio offers several services to accommodate all these visitors, whether they perform a pilgrimage for spiritual fellowship, or if they know the historical, cultural and artistic heritage of the Cave.

Visit Montserrat, the monastery

Montserrat is a mountain, a shrine and a monastery. A community of spirit.
Hence the uniqueness that purchases life sanctuary. Focusing on the common prayer of the monks, open to all, and also in the service of welcome from the community for the good of the people that go to Montserrat.

The mountain of Montserrat, located to the right of the Llobregat River, is one of the highest and the rugged Sierra Prelitoral Catalana. The monastery is situated at 725 m above sea level, and St. Jerome, at 1,236 m, is the highest peak.

The whole mountain seems higher because it rises abruptly from the river Llobregat to the top. Nor is there any mountains nearby that can compete in height, so that is isolated in this sector.

Montserrat

It is about six miles long and five wide, with a perimeter of about 25 kilometers. The mountain, as a whole, is 45 square kilometers.
Its silhouette recalls the serrated blade of a saw. Hence its name: Montserrat means “serrated mountain ‘.
